Besides the placement of The Fourth Marker as a quarterfinalist in the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award competition, the novel and I will be at the Barnes & Noble Store in Salisbury, MD, on Thursday, June 12, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. to discuss the novel and for signing.
    On Monday, July 14, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., we'll be at the Talbot County Library in Easton, MD for reading and signing. I hope to see you at one or both venues.

        Elderly Gabriel Townsend is being crushed between the metaphoric anvil of his pragmatic beliefs and the falling hammer of his wife's pending death.
       As a child, he scorned the legends of his Native American ancestors and ignored miraculous cures of three family members during the Great Depression. Now facing the loss of his wife, he relives his childhood memories, guided by the spirit of his half-breed grandfather from beyond - well beyond - the grave.
       He recalls that, each time a family member was cured, another person of evil character and not of tribal blood disappeared, followed by the mysterious presence of another wood marker on a sacred tribal hill on the family's land. Finally accepting the truth of long ago, elderly Gabriel plans to beg the elders' spirits to take his life in exchange for his wife's, aware that a fourth marker would symbolize his life - and death.

        The first two stories, "Marrow Bone Road" and "The Painted Lady of Marrow Bone Road," tell the tale of the same haunting event from two perspectives, one from the side of the living and the other from...well, the other side. They also ask the question, "Exactly who is haunting whom?"
        In "East Of Here," a part-time paranormal investigator is a staunch skeptic – until his own high-tech equipment proves him wrong.
        "Heart To Heart" is the story of a young woman, devastated by the death of her husband on the same day as her third miscarriage, until the impossible happens and her fondest wish is granted from the other side.
        "Carly And Me" presents a tale of love and compassion from the other side, amidst chaos and calamity on the side of the living.
        "In Search of The Entailed Hat" is the story of a man inexplicably drawn to an antique book store, who discovers much more about the other side than he expected.
        In "Heartwood," a man attends his ex-wife's viewing after she is killed in a car accident and learns that their relationship was stronger than he ever imagined.
